“ How can you rate this 5 star when your wife found a rubber band in her mash? BECAUSE Everybody has a bad day. In my 52 years I have yet to find a perfect person or restaurant. The food is great! Service is great! Atmosphere is great! Big portions for decent price and im a sucker for hot pancake syrup and real butter. I’ll be back again and I strongly advise you to try this hometown little dinner. P.S. The owner graciously comp our entire meal. I can appreciate that. ”

The owner personally welcomed us and promptly seated our group of six, which was much appreciated. The kids were entertained with books, giving us adults a rare moment of tranquility. Everyone enjoyed their meals, especially the omelettes and pancakes. The train-themed decor added a fun touch to our visit. “ The Exeter Whistle Stop is the Gold Standard for American Diners! They nail the big 3 when it comes to a restaurant. First off, the Atmosphere is amazing. The diner sits in the cozy setting of downtown Exeter. The ambiance of trains on the inside and outside is perfectly done. Secondly, the top notch service by the two waitresses. Teresa, (not sure if I spelled her name right) was my main server. Not once did my, or any other person in my group drinks go empty. Both ladies had our drinks refilled regularly without having to ask. The waitresses were constantly in motion taking orders, serving meals and refilling patrons drinks flawlessly. All while being able to interact with each and every customer and make you feel at home. It truly was an art form to watch. Thirdly, was the food. My pictures do it no justice. The flavors and textures of each meal were nothing short of perfection. The homemade chili was superb. The French fries were perfectly crisp on the outside while the center was fluffy and the seasoning was spot on. I highly recommend trying it. The Patty Melt had a perfect toasty outside while the meat inside was very flavorful and the onion rings were some of the best I’ve ever eaten. The biscuits and gravy were flavor packed along with the French Dip. If you find yourself anywhere within 20 miles of this amazing diner you have to stop in. I actually went back a second time recently and ordered the Chicken Fried Steak with country potatoes. It was out of the world delicious. ”

“ Fabulous! Great service, wonderful hostess, delicious food and excellent decor—especially if you’re a train enthusiast, like me. Our 4 breakfasts were delicious and real comfort food done just right. Our only disappointment was it wasn’t pie day(carrot cake) but we’ll be back—earlier in the day. Enjoy! ”

“ Quaint little breakfast and lunch diner near historic downtown Exeter serving generous portions! Everything served here is homemade. Our order, along with every order we saw brought out to other diners were huge! Pancakes the size of a large platter but still delicious. I ordered diced ham with scrambled eggs and they must've used 6 eggs (not powered!) to make it! I'm a big eater and was hungry that day and I STILL struggled to finish it all! Careful if you order the biscuits n gravy, that alone is enough to satisfy most breakfast appetites. They are very busy so be patient, it's well worth the wait. We went mid morning on a weekday and they were STILL busy! Be sure and ask your server to turn on the train that runs on the tracks overhead while you're there to complete your visit. They are NOT open for dinner so you've gotta make it a breakfast or lunch visit but you can do that 7 days a week. ”

“ For a such small place, the layout is great with plenty of seating indoors and out. Service was awesome and attentive; food was good, served fast and it was plentiful. Prices are ridiculous (LOW!) Decor was tasteful and train-related. I will go there again! ”

“ 5.5 out of 5 stars! The setting - it was 88 degrees in Exeter,CA. The sky was clear, the mountains were beautiful…the family famished from visiting Sequoia National Park. We arrived at a small town diner adorned with train accoutrements. We entered to beaming smiles and welcoming words. Our kids were enamored by the floating trains. Our coffee cups runneth over, ne’r once needing to be flagged. The food was plentiful and delicious, and beyond expectation. They even had perfectly prepared cream of wheat, velvety and smooth. Definitely worth a stop! The place was great! ”

“ It's a very nice quaint little place. So people are very friendly in there. The owner's very friendly and the waitress are very friendly. A lot of people stop and eat breakfast there when it's open. It's got boost and it's got tables chairs at the the counter there where you could sit. Eat. Like, I say it's very friendly in there. It's a small place. It's been there for quite a while. And it's a nice place to stop and eat breakfast or lunch. ”

“ UPDATE: I can't complain about this place. This eatery is as local and mom & pop as you can get. You get that wholesome feel the moment you walk in and are served with the upmost quality of service. Being small I'm sure helps, but they don't shy from making you feel like your at your grandma's place. The food is fresh and above any standards I have seen in quite awhile. This was only my 2nd time here. I am not a huge breakfast fan, but We had time to kill and my wife is. I went ahead and ordered a omelet and my judging starts with how fresh the avocado is, and they didn't disappoint and what's even better is they didn't skimp out either. We got there right when it opened so we got sat right away, which is key because by the time we were leaving they were getting busy. So food is great, service is none other and the ambiance is what you expect from most places in town. Try it and let me know. All the time I have ever lived or now that i don't, but still spend sometime in Exeter I never made it a point to come try this hidden gem out for myself. Its a small, but clean location with a adequate staff. The menu isn't large but just right the size to accommodate most tastes and diets and they don't mind making changes to any of their meals if the need be. Everything is clean and the staff is very hospitable. The food comes out hot and just s you ordered it. I really don't have any complaints and hope to come back soon to try out their lunch menu. The two pork chops, eggs, hash browns and toast were all cooked perfectly. Thank you ”

We had a table with 8 people ( try to keep parties small, or group up as there is only one table that can accommodate a party that size) multiple tables can comfortable seat 4-6 people. Regardless it’s worth the wait. You can taste( and smell) the quality food. Highly recommend the banana pancakes/ chicken steak/ biscuits and gravy/ country fried potatoes. ”

“ I was disappointed when I didn’t see eggs benedict on the menu and thought I would just settle for an omlette. I got the railroad with sausage, cheese, green pepper, and onions. It also came with hash browns and a biscuit with gravy on the side and it was A LOT of food! After I took that first bite in the omlette, I was not disappointed anymore. Usually, I feel that omlettes are bland and that’s why I never usually get them, but this one was super fluffy, flavorful, cheesy and delicious! I was really surprised and knew that I need to give omlettes a chance again. The hash browns are really good as well and were cooked so it was crispy on the outside and potato-y on the inside. I didn’t eat the biscuit as it was too much food, but the gravey – OMG – SO GOOD! I ate it on top of my hash browns and couldn’t stop eating even after I was full. Overall, this place reminded me of why I love breakfast. They make everything in house and it’s amazing. Best of all, you get a ton of food at a great price and the service is very homey and great! ”
